The crankshaft is not actually a modern invention; it has been around since before the advent of the reciprocating piston engine. The ancient Romans were already operating a sawmill in Hierapolis in Asia Minor in the third century. The rotary motion of the mill wheel was converted into vertical motion with the help of a shaft and a connecting rod. The same principle that powers your Puch moped. The only difference is that the combustion engine works in exactly the opposite way. The movement of the moped piston is converted into a rotary movement. This is then transmitted via the moped clutch and gearbox.
The crankshaft of your Puch motorbike is exposed to incredible thermal and mechanical forces. For this reason, it must be manufactured with the utmost precision. This also applies to the accuracy of fit of the shaft parts, such as the ball bearing or shim discs. Inconspicuous, but of enormous importance, is the oil seal. The shaft seal, as this part is also called, has the important task of preventing dust or splash water from entering. Even on a non-tuned Puch moped, the loads that your crankshaft has to withstand are enormous. If you have tuned your bike and are travelling at high speeds, then our high-end racing crankshafts are sure to put a smile on your face.
